Thanks to the generous support of the people of Greene County, the annual Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign in December netted $6,719.80. Now, just six weeks into the new year, the Greene County unit has dispersed $2,849, or 42 percent of the funds.
Last year, the unit ran out of funds in July and it appears that this year the needs are even greater. Many families are struggling to make ends meet.
Because of that, the Greene County Salvation Army unit is partnering with The Gardens assisted living center to celebrate Christmas in July. The event will be on Saturday, July 27, from 2 to 4 pm at 1000 W. Washington St in Jefferson.
The afternoon will include music, ice cream, and a Red Kettle Drive. It is hoped that many will participate in the fun and at the same time share some of their resources with their fellow families in need.
Those unable to attend are encouraged to drop a check made out to Greene County Salvation Army to Home State Bank anytime. A QR code is also available for donations.
The Greene County unit disperses money based upon recommendations from Community Opportunities in Jefferson. Money has mostly been given for rent, heat, and water bill assistance. Occasional requests for a replacement tire or gas to get to work are fulfilled as well. Keeping a job is a priority for distribution.
The majority of recipients have at least one job in the household, and most are families with children. While Jefferson and Grand Junction residents are most likely to request help, the local unit helps people from the entire county.
